‘Molecules of freedom’: U.S. rebrands natural gas as it increases exports

The U.S. Department of Energy has apparently rebranded liquefied natural gas (LNG) as "freedom gas." In a news release announcing additional exports of LNG from Texas, the new title was first used.  "Increasing export capacity from the Freeport LNG project is critical to the worldwide spread of freedom gas by providing a diverse and affordable source of clean energy to America's allies," U.S. Energy Undersecretary Mark W. Menezes said in the release of May 28.

Steven Winberg, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy, used a slightly different term when discussing LNG, but the theme of liberty remained.

"I'm pleased that the Energy Department is doing what it can to promote an effective regulatory system that allows U.S. freedom molecules to be exported to the world," he said in the release.

And this month earlier, the U.S. The theme of freedom was also used by Energy Secretary Rick Perry to promote the United States. Brussels ' LNG.

"The United States is again providing the European continent with a form of freedom, and it is in the form of liquefied natural gas rather than in the form of young American soldiers," Perry said, according to Euractiv's online news site.

Global News contacted LNG for comment on the new name, but the Department of Energy did not hear it back.

The new name on social media gained ridicule.

"This must be a joke," tweeted Jay Inslee, one of the Democrats running for the nomination of the president.

The rebranding comes in the midst of a U.S.-China trade war— and LNG is one of the causalities.

No U.S. data displays. In March or April, LNG shipping vessels went to the country, Reuters reported.

27 LNG vessels went to China in 2018, down from 30 in 2017. However, most of those left U.S. ports before the trade war began, with 18 tankers going to China in the first half of the year and only nine in the second half.

Previous rebrandings The U.S. has not rebranded a commodity for the first time.

After France refused to join the United States in its Iraq war of 2003, the United States. House cafeteria renamed "freedom fries" to French fries. (NBC reports that at the time French toast was also renamed "freedom toast.") Trump also suggested approving the rebranding strategy. The president said the company should "FIX" and "REBRAND" the aircraft after two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft crashed and the rest of the models were grounded.

Trump, who brands his Trump-named hotels, golf courses and buildings, tweeted sarcastically: "What the hell I know about branding, perhaps nothing (but I became president!)"
