An amateur football team in Ireland ended up at the center of controversy because they faked one of their players ' death to postpone a match.
Ballybrack FC would have had to play in the Irish Leinster Senior League against Arklow Town, but the game was postponed after representatives of Ballybrack announced that one of the foreign players of the club, Spaniard Fernando Nuno la Fuente, had died in a terrible accident. The whole league was shocked by the news, and mourning hit everybody: minutes of silence were held before all the other matches began, the players wore black bracelets in memory of La Fuente, and some teams expressed condolences on social media. But the shock of the death of the player was nothing compared to the shock that everyone had when it was found that La Fuente had not actually died, but had simply returned to Spain.
League officials found that the alleged demise of Fernando Nuno la Fuente was an excuse for postponing the game. Things came to the fore when the League came into contact with the La Fuente club to see if there was anything they could do to help, and to get in touch with the family to get their sympathy. However, many suspicions have been generated by Ballybrack's responses. At first the team claimed the body had been buried in Spain, the home country of the player, but it was strange for this alleged burial's too-rapid times.
Ultimately, officials at the Ballybrack FC had no choice but to admit the truth: La Fuente was all right, and he just returned to Spain. The team apologized and the club secretary resigned, even though it wasn't clear to whom the idea was to announce the player's death to postpone the game.
Journalists later joined Fernando Nuno la Fuente and admitted that somebody in his former club had told him that he could hear news about him in an accident. But he also added that he meant something minor, not death, because he thought "accident." "I thought I'd say I broke my leg or something," he explained.
The reason for the desire to postpone the game was primarily logistic, according to the player, because the other players were having trouble playing that day. "They don't play football professionally, most of them have a normal job and some of them are working in the UK[ the team is Irish], I think that's the problem.
