India: a 'panic button' for women's safety arrives

The governor of Andhra Pradesh YS Jagan Mohan Reddy today presented "Abhayam", a "panic button" that should guarantee the safety of women while traveling by taxi or auto rickshaw (i characteristic three-wheeled taxis); in case of emergency, by pressing the button, a request for help is sent directly to the police.

"The goal", said Reddy "is to equip the device, which works through a GPS detector, capable of detecting the position of the vehicle in real time, 100 thousand autorickshaws within the next twelve months".
The first one thousand "panic buttons" will be installed on vehicles in service in Visakhapatnam, the executive capital of the state. In February, another 5,000 will be added and then to 50,000 by July and subsequently cover the other large cities of the state, Vijayawada and Tirupati.
In launching the project, Reddy recalled that his government considers the safety of women and children a priority: in 2019 Andhra Pradesh approved, first of all Indian states, a law in favor of women, the so-called "Disha Bill. ", which provides a quick procedure, just 21 days, when a woman reports rape or sexual violence.
One of the plagues of Indian justice is the exasperating length of legal proceedings, which often end up discouraging victims from filing complaints.
